Report Cards Out ? New York Schools Show Progress in Student Achievement but Graduation Rates in Trouble
The spring 2006 statewide report cards for New York Schools show that more schools are making progress in meeting their achievement goals for improvement in English and mathematics, as mandated by the state. Though achieving standards in middle school English is still a problem, fewer students have serious academic problems at the elementary and middle school levels, while more of these students are demonstrating higher standards in mathematics.
The performance of the elementary and middle schools has improved significantly. For example, the percentage of students meeting all standards almost doubled from 22 percent in year 2000 to 41 percent in 2005. The percentage of fourth graders with serious academic problems declined from 19 percent in year 2000 to only eight percent in 2005.
At the high school level, 64 percent of the students in the Class of 2005 graduated in a four-year period. More students are graduating each year and more are earning Regents Diplomas, but the graduation rate still is too low.
The New York schools report cards also showed a correlation between attendance and graduation rates. When attendance falls below 92 percent, the graduation rate declines significantly. When attendance is below 88 percent, the graduation rate plummets.
State Education Commissioner Richard Mills believes the graduation rate is much too low. Though student achievement is improving, Mills believes that new reforms are needed to improve the graduation rates of the future New York schools classes.
During the next few months, the New York schools will take a series of aggressive actions to solve the problem. Actions under consideration are:
• Set both graduation and attendance goals, measuring the results annually, and raising the levels each year;
• Hold each school accountable for meeting the targeted goals in both graduation and attendance by accelerating the Schools Under Registration Review (SURR) requirements;
• Reform current teaching standards by requiring all teachers to teach only in their certified areas by a certain date; and
• Monitor safety plans and violent incident data, and requiring reforms to ensure a safe learning environment for both students and teachers.
Additionally, the New York schools have partially completed a student record system, giving each student a unique statewide identifier. In the future, the identifiers will ensure that each student is counted within the school report cards. This allows for a more accurate measurement of a school’s progress and student achievement.

Need points for a debate on schools monitoring student internet use?
I have a school wide debate. I need some points for the debate.
It is on: whether or not schools are right to monitor students internet use.
Points on both sides are appreciated, but I am on the con side, as in they are not right to monitor internet usage.
———————————————————————
Heres What I have so far:
Opening:
Privacy is a long debated issue, and that’s whats at stake here. Every student in this school puts their privacy at risk every time they use the computers. The software can be used for malicious purposes, most importantly reading you email, or chat messages, stealing your passwords for any account you sign into. Not just your school passwords but yahoo, msn, google, anything you type in.
It is not fair to monitor our internet use in this manner. The purpose is to stop us from viewing inappropriate websites, and to protect the computers. Our privacy does not need to be breached to accomplish this.
Questions:
How does the opposing pro speaker feel about his about his and his peer’s privacy being breached every time they use the computers?
Points to bring up:
Just because there’s a guest in your house doesn’t give you the right to go through their things.
We invade everyone’s privacy including those who are doing nothing wrong. Why do we take the approach guilty until proven innocent?
It wastes the valuable time of those using the software, and monitoring the students.
It clogs up the network, it wastes our time, while we wait for the network.
How do you deal with the oc transpo strike when you’re a student?
What to do about the oc transpo strike when you’re a broke student?
I’m an Ottawa u student. I have 3 exams thsi week plus an assignment to hand in which I can ONLY work on from school because the software I need is only available there. The strike has absolutely screwed me over as I solely depend on buses. I managed to hitch a ride with a friend today. (I was lucky).
Tomorow I have to find a way to get to school early in the morning to finish my assignment and write my exam at 7 pm and somehow get a ride back. I’ve contemplated sleeping at school but I got this idea onceI got home…Yeah it sucks! I’m sure I would’ve been really productive.
Now, no idea what to do. I am looking for free carpooling services as I am broke as hell. No kidding I totally drained my account after having been jobless for 3 months. I don’t even have a dollar! I guess I was doing ok until this! Lesson learned. Always have money…
Any tips? Advice? Guys I need help. The strike is not an excuse to miss exams…
There are shuttle services offered but none where I live. So I emailed the guy…waiting for a reply.

At our school there is a student printer at which students print at when they finish projects in class.. Th?
is a 10 cent fee if they mess up a page. This helps pay for the ink. The printer is a Dell 3100cn. We have a problem… when the students mess up a page they grab it before we can account for the missing page… This has become a nuisance… We already have software to monitor the computers and control them… We need some kind of software that would save all the details of each print job and a copy of what was being printed… Even if they have to have the instructor approve each printed page.
Thanks…

Also this is a networked printer printing directly from a server to which the print jobs are sent before being sent to the printer…
Thanks
This is in a classroom environment so there is no option of putting it out of reach.
thanks internet cop and davros… but email is strictly forbidden. Its blocked through our SurfPartol box… even email internally… We are really looking for some software to log the pages and jobs…
Are there federal regulations on how long a university can delay disbursing student loans?
I am a graduate student at Anderson Univ receiving Stafford federal loans. However, we are four weeks into our semester and the financial aid office has still not disbursed funds…in fact, they money has not even been posted to students’ accounts yet. The univ has been implementing a new software system to disburse loans, and it is still not working.
Are there regulations about such delays? It is defeating the point of getting loans to help pay bills during school if the loan money isn’t even here to use.
Adobe software rules for ebay buy discount student version?
In response to a recent letter to Adobe School purchase Affiliate partners.. journeyed.com.. I got this attachment. I found it very informative? What do you think?
Dear Terry B
Journeyed and the software manufacturer Adobe understand that many customers may have multiple computers. Unfortunately the software manufacturers offer their products at an academic discount in order to assist faculty and students with their educational needs. It is not their goal to provide a copy for each computer owned by a customer therefore they have restricted academic versions to 1 copy per each qualified student/faculty. A full store version will usually allow you to download it more than once for all of your computers. Aprox 2-4 times per full version copy.
As a student/ or faculty member.. you are eligible to purchase only one copy of each software at the educational discounted rate. There is zero difference in the software. However, the student version is only downloadable once and it does not come with the flip thru paper booklet guide. It just comes with the full DVD-ROM software sets. You can get many variations of these tutorial booklets in any case at Barnes and Noble or Borders books. And with the money you save on student versions, you will have thousands of extra dollars to buy all these frills and maybe even a new pc or laptop. And of course there’s allways tutorials on wwwyoutbe.com
In the future; Should the product you purchase release a newer version you can then purchase 1 copy of the new release on your student id again and again and so on. If a street customer, or someone no longer enrolled in school needs more copies of a particular software.. they would need to then purchase the commercial version product at full price. But for all the extra money they will also get the tutorial flip thru paper booklet with their full version.
If there is more than 1 academically qualified person at any same residence, additional academic proofs can be submitted on that home account to allow additional purchases of a desired product to be made. Instead of just one per houshold. The internal tracking at Adobe is just to make sure who and how many they are buying. And they generally track purchases by address and name to prevent Scam and Software Burners from ordering tons of all the most expensive programs. You can buy only one of each of any software set or program as a student. There are dozens of varieties and you are able to purchase one or all of any/all of them. Adobe programs need a key and a serial number to be activated, they come with this in the DVD-ROM software case once verification has been submitted.
To buy from a student on ebay, you will want to make sure the student has not opened it, or at least make sure they have the serial key numbers that came with their set and offer a refund if it doesn’t work. This way their version should work for the next person to aquire the software set. And there is no reason it shouldn’t. Adobe has no way of tracking who has it once it leaves their wearhouse paid for and with the serial numbers/ key number enclosed. They are not gps satellite or ein tracked programs, nor can they be, and most importantly- Adobe cannot read your intentions to sell your work if you created it with student discount purchased software, versus full price retail version software. This is not the Minority Report Staring Tom Cruise- or The Matrix. At least not yet! Should you have any further questions about Our Adobe Partnership please feel free to contact Customer Service.

What is the best student computer?
Recently the hard drive on my old laptop crashed and i need to purchase a new one before i head back to college in the end of august and am not sure what is the best choice.
Mostly it is going to be used for documents such as papers and projects for school. It also needs to be able to withstand certain accounting software i need for classes.
I also use it for music/pictures yet i do not go overboard on either one.
Occasionally i watch movies on it but never keep any on there.
I dont usually transport it to & from class so being super lightweight is not a problem.
I have been told the two best options are dell or hp because they have the fewest problems.
Any suggestions would be great?
