Background resetting itself on computer?
I just got my school-owned laptop back from getting the updated Microsoft Office and a new hard drive, so I’m busy playing with settings. Whenever I change the background image, it is reset to a blank blue when I reboot. I can see it when the computer is locked, and in the preview in “Display Properties”. The only solution I have found is to first change the theme from “Modified Theme” to “Windows XP” and then choose the image that I want, but this still does not allow the image to stay there after I restart the computer. I doubt a virus/spyware could be the problem, as the hard drive was just replaced, and my school has the most extensive security software. We are not permitted to add any other spyware/virus software than is already installed. Each student has an administrator/superuser account, but I really don’t see how that could help. I have no idea what to do ![]()
Any ideas?
Yes, I am applying the settings each time

Does the Linksys Wireless USB adapter require any software to be installed on the computer?
I was considering buying a Linksys Wireless USB adapter (http://www.linksys.com/servlet/Satellite?c=L_Product_C2&childpagename=US%2FLayout&cid=1134691790190&pagename=Linksys%2FCommon%2FVisitorWrapper&lid=9019039789B12) so I can use my ipod touch at school when I’m in the computer lab, as the school blocks many useful websites like Wikipedia &, of course, Yahoo Answers. But the computers are set up so you can’t install any software on the student account, so I was wondering if the wireless USB is a plug & play sort of thing, or if I would need to install any software to use it. And if I do, does anyone have any reasonable alternatives?
Well, Kasey C, it seems to be more of a leap in logic on your part. Let me put it in terms that your over-thinking mind can understand: School uses Internet Explorer. School uses Internet Explorer website blocking software. iPod Touch uses Safari. No website blocking software on Safari. Safari goes to any website on world wide web. Problem solved. (if it could access internet) Thanks for the help, but you may want to really THINK before you speak. Your knowledge of computers obviously surpasses mine, so go work on your common sense.
What is the best student computer?
Recently the hard drive on my old laptop crashed and i need to purchase a new one before i head back to college in the end of august and am not sure what is the best choice.
Mostly it is going to be used for documents such as papers and projects for school. It also needs to be able to withstand certain accounting software i need for classes.
I also use it for music/pictures yet i do not go overboard on either one.
Occasionally i watch movies on it but never keep any on there.
I dont usually transport it to & from class so being super lightweight is not a problem.
I have been told the two best options are dell or hp because they have the fewest problems.
Any suggestions would be great?
How do I keep people from creating new User Accounts on my Vista computer?
Whenever I go out to school or work, my sisters go on my computer and install hazardous software. So I placed a password on my user account to prevent them from go on my computer. But the little buggers found a way to create their own account on my computer and continue to install programs. Is there a way to prevent others to create a user account on my vista computer?
Computer Software for inventory / pos / customer history and a server?
My family owns a tire store in the metro Detroit area. The shop has been around for quite sometime but has always been fairly old school in their inter-office processes. Invoices are all hand written inventory is kept in a log book. Since we bought the store we’ve been slowly updating everything. I am trying to setup a company network on an in house server. Set up computers on ever desk. keep an electronic inventory etc. The problem that I keep running into is that we deal with retail and wholesale accounts. I need advice on a network setup as well as a capable program for invoicing both retail and whole sale customers as well a point of sales terminal, and keep tabs on our inventory. Anyone with some advice I would really appreciate it.

School Computer Software?
ok, i know most people will say “why do you care” but i plan on pulling off a prank pretty soon and i know very little about school security software.. i’m pretty smart with computers (i’ve changed the admins password and didn’t get caught..) and i was wondering if you could tell me what computer software my school has, i understand if i don’t have enough info.. but please say that, just the name of the software would be nice. ok, so this is what i know our school can do, when you log onto the schools network with your account, our admin can go to the computer that you just used and tell who logged onto that computer.. also, when you are on the internet, our school has a filter that tells the admin what sites a certian computer was at at a certian time, so if lets say im on computer 23 and look at a porn site, they can tell that it was computer 23 at such and such time, which then can see i logged onto that computer at that time… what my question is basically, is what software could they possible be using (our school is super small and doesn’t have alot of money…) and if i used a proxy, then could they possibly see what i looked at (IM NOT LOOKING AT BAD SITES im just curious, i personally would like to surf anonomously (sorry for my bad spelling) thx alot, hope this isn’t to long
ok, im talking about a small school, the whole k-12 is 1,500 people, our school admin is stupid as hell (in my opionon) he leaves cammand prompt open for anyone to use, you can boot up into safe mode, you cal look at his admin drive, you can edit anyone’s files that our on the students drive… he is just stupid
